Aston Villa have reached the semi-finals of the Women’s League Cup for the first time in the club’s history

Aston Villa beat Brighton after a penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s League Cup.

Veatriki Sarri sent a swerving effort past Daphne van Domselaar from distance to give hosts Brighton the lead.

Villa thought they had equalised when Ebony Salmon bundled home a loose ball, but she was adjudged to be offside.

They drew level when Kirsty Hanson headed in a Kenza Dali cross and – after extra time – won the shootout 2-0 as Van Domselaar saved three penalties.

Villa will find out their semi-final opponents in Friday’s draw, which takes place live on Sportsday on the BBC News channel (18:30 GMT).

They could face Chelsea, Manchester City or the winner of holders Arsenal’s game against second-tier London City Lionesses in the final four.

Although it was a tightly-matched encounter on Wednesday, chances were not hard to come by and both sides nearly snatched victory in normal time.

Villa’s Maz Pacheco saw a late half-volley parried away after Sophie Baggaley reacted quickly to spot her effort through a crowded box.

Brighton’s Lee Geum-min should have done better when, one-on-one with Van Domselaar, she curled wide of the far post in injury time.

Lee also had an earlier strike scrambled off the goalline as both sides battled to find a late winner.

Despite efforts to find a winner the scores remained level after 120 minutes and Brighton failed to convert any of their spot-kicks as Villa booked their ticket to the semi-finals.
