Jurgen Klopp has the ‘eye of the tiger’ as Liverpool chase a fairytale farewell for the German boss, Mail Sport’s Dominic King has told It’s All Kicking Off.

The Reds have been relentless since Klopp announced he would be leaving at the end of the campaign.

They have already claimed the Carabao Cup and may yet win the Premier League and the UEFA Europa League to send their popular boss off in style.

King, who reported extensively on Klopp’s era at Anfield, told the podcast there’s something about his demeanour at the moment which doesn’t bode well for their rivals.

He told a story from when Liverpool were chasing multiple trophies in 2022 when Klopp bumped into Anfield legend Steven Gerrard outside his local pub in Formby days before the Champions League final.

That season, Klopp’s side had already won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup but just missed out on the Premier League title by a point to Manchester City.

They would lose 1-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris a few days later.

‘I was with Jurgen Klopp on Wednesday at a pre-match press conference and he’s just got the sort of… I would say he’s got the eye of the tiger at the minute,’ King told It’s All Kicking Off.

‘He looks similar to two years ago. I’ll never forget two years ago when they were going for the quadruple.

‘And the faith that he had in the team was such that one night he took his dog for a walk around for him to be where he lives.

‘There’s a very nice pub there called Freshfield. Steven Gerrard was in there that night, it was a lovely evening.

‘Stevie was in having a quick shandy, as you do before the kids go to bed. Next thing, Jurgen walks past and he’s got his dog with him. And they see each other, hug each other, and Jurgen sits down and has a pint with him.

‘This was while he was like, he had the title decided, I think, coming up, or it was either the Champions League final, or there was a title decided, but he was just so relaxed that he was, because of the faith that he had in his team.

‘You can see he’s got that sort of confidence back about that he knows they’re going to deliver for him. I just think he’s got them in a really, really good place.’

Liverpool will be gunning for revenge on arch-rivals Manchester United – who knocked them out the FA Cup last month – when they return to Old Trafford in the league this Sunday.

Ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard recalled the story of his pub meeting with Klopp in The Anfield Wrap’s series JURGEN, released last year.

‘He was walking the dog, I was sitting outside with one of my friends having a couple of pints,’ Gerrard said.

‘I shouted over to wish him good luck, because he had a Champions League final days later. I thought he’d be in the zone.

‘He said to me: ‘No, no, no. Go the bar and get me a pint.’ So we get him a pint. He ended up having two or three, he had a couple of smokes, his dog waited patiently, and we had a good craic for probably over an hour. About football, about life in Liverpool, his plans for the future.

‘He was just really great company to have and it was different from a football environment, it was Jurgen in his plain clothes, his dog walking gear.

‘He was fantastic with my mate, he made him feel part of the conversation and I think that just sums the man up.

‘He’s a genuine, humble character, who’s got a presence and an aura. And at the same time he’s one of the most gifted managers there’s ever been. That’s a special person, for me.’
