Sir Alex Ferguson has paid special tribute to his former Man United striker Javier Hernandez after he completed a return to boyhood Mexican side Chivas.

‘Chicharito’ – who was a popular figure during his six seasons at Old Trafford – was unveiled by the Liga MX outfit on Wednesday and given a hero’s welcome after a successful career in Europe that saw him win the Premier League twice, the Europa League and the Club World Cup.

Hernandez has scored a total of 195 goals from 505 career appearances, going from United to Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen before also starring for West Ham, Sevilla and LA Galaxy in the MLS.

Sir Alex decided to post a message to Chicharito after his journey came full circle following his initial move to United from Chivas in 2010.

The legendary Scot hailed him for his ‘fantastic’ displays for United and lauded his career – tipping him for even more success back home in Mexico.

‘Chicharito, it’s your old boss here,’ Sir Alex said. ‘First of all I want to congratulate you on your return to your old club, back to Mexico where it all started where I found you, signed you and you were a great, fantastic player for us.

‘You’ve had a great career and I think now you’ve an opportunity at your old club to add your experience and give your experience to all the players there.

‘So regards to your family, have a great family and more goals to come.’

Hernandez responded to Ferguson’s message on his own X account. ‘Boss, there’s no words to describe how much you mean to me. Been able to say I was one of your players is one of my biggest achievements. THANK YOU! And to my other family

‘Thank you for letting me be part of your history. Will love you forever. Once a red always a red.’

Ferguson handed Chicharito 27 Premier League appearances in his debut season of 2010-11 that saw him win the title while scoring 13 goals in the top flight and 20 in all competitions.

He followed that up with 12 goals in all competitions the following season – in a campaign that saw them miss out on the title to Man City – before he netted 18 in his final season under Sir Alex in 2012-13, finishing at United with 59 goals.

Hernandez – Mexico’s top scorer with 52 strikes from 109 caps – left LA Galaxy in November after tearing his ACL and has been looking for a new club before agreeing a deal wit Chivas until the end of the season.

‘Chicharito is back home!’, the Liga MX side confirmed on Wednesday.

‘ChivaBrothers, it’s official! Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández returns to the team of his amores for the Clausura 2024.

‘We are convinced that his love for the institution, the experience acquired during his successful career and the leadership that characterizes him will be reflected in this new stage with Chivas.’
