Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to return to management for the first time since being sacked by Manchester United as he edges closer to a move to Turkey, according to reports.

The former United striker-turned-manager left Old Trafford two-years ago as club bosses decided he was no longer capable of achieving success as manager.

Solskjaer guided the club to second in the Premier League and a Europa League final defeat during his time in charge, but has been out of a job since leaving Manchester.

Now he is moving towards joining Besiktas as the Turkish side look to appoint their third manager of the season, as reported by NTV Spor.

The 50-year-old has been largely short of top European coaching opportunities since leaving United and has kept a low-profile out of the public eye.

A chance to take over at Besiktas gives Solskjaer a way back into European football and talks have been ongoing with the club over the Norwegian’s appointment.

Soskjaer is the preferred managerial candidate to take over from the recently-ousted Riza Calimbay who was sacked following just seven-games in charge.

Besiktas are currently fifth in the Turkish Super Lig and there is an ambition in the second half of the season to close the gap to Fenerbahce and Galatasaray at the top of the table.

During his short managerial stint at United, Solskjaer succeeded with a 41.18 per cent win percentage and an average 1.41 points-per-game.

His arrival in Istanbul could also rejuvenate the career of defender Eric Bailly who was a trusted regular by Solskjaer during his stint at the 13-time Premier League champions.

Bailly departed United in the summer and signed a one-year contract at Besiktas. but has been exiled from the first-team by club chiefs while injured.

The club quoted Bailly had been banished because of ‘poor performances’ and ‘incompatibility with the team’ as he joined a group of five dumped players.

However, Solskjaer’s imminent arrival could give the centre-back a lifeline at Besiktas given the pairs solid relationship during their time together at United.
