Lewis Steele’s match report

Thanks for joining us tonight, everybody.

FULL-TIME: Legia Warszawa 3-2 Aston Villa

FULL-TIME: LASK 1-3 LIVERPOOL

Five minutes of stoppage time added

GOAL! LASK 1-3 LIVERPOOL! MO SALAH!

Mo Salah nutmegs the goalkeeper after dribbling in the box!

Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez were helpful in the build-up there. Salah was buzzed around since coming on and looks to have sealed the result here.

The Reds have showed no sign of settling for a result.

Kostas Tsimikas down

He was caught by Zieries in Liverpool’s area but he’s okay now.

Liverpool subs

Joel Matip is on for Ibrahima Konate. It hasn’t been Konate’s best night but he’s only just back from injury.

Salah almost scores!

He’s only been on for a minute and already Mo Salah is causing mayhem.

He has a shot blocked by a defender inside the box which looks bound for the corner.

Ryan Gravenberch down and subbed; Mo Salah on

He is sat on the floor with an injury, seemingly muscular.

He had driven forward on the counter-attack but lost control of the ball and went down. Maybe cramp?

Salah replaces him and instantly brings some zest to the side.

LASK subs

Moussa Kone on for Ljubicic.

Ibrahim Mustapha on for Havel

GOAL! LASK 1-2 LIVERPOOL! LUIS DIAZ!

And Luis Diaz has put the Reds ahead!

Against the run of play, Liverpool break down the right and it’s a cross from Ryan Gravenberch into Luis Diaz, who has space around the six-yard boax and swipes it home.

Liverpool subs

Jurgen Klopp has made a host of changes.

Dominik Szoboszlai is on for Wataru Endo.

Alexis Mac Allister is on for Ben Doak.

Joe Gomez is on for Stefan Bajcetic.

GOAL! LASK 1-1 LIVERPOOL! DARWIN NUNEZ!

A powerful penalty is thumped home by Nunez. Lawal dived the right way but that was a hard one to stop.

Penalty for Liverpool!

A stupid foul on Luis Diaz. Diaz had got a shot away and for some reason, Philipp Zieries flicked a foot out at him as he went to ground after the ball had gone.

Goal! Legia Warszawa 3-2 Aston Villa! Muci again!

Legia are ahead for a third time with yet another lovely finish from Muci as his well-placed shot trickles past Emiliano Martinez.

Liverpool waste advantage

Stefan Bajcetic lashed a shot from range, but it travelled mere inches before striking the hand of a LASK player. The referee waved on for advantage, but Liverpool lost it moments later with poor passing and movement.

Jurgen Klopp not happy!

Jurgen Klopp is already gesturing and shouting at his players.

Virgil van Dijk played a pass behind Ibrahima Konate and then Stefan Bajcetic, in an attempt to release Ben Doak with a long ball down the line, sweeps the ball out of play. It nearly came off, but that’s not good enough. It’s the fine margins that Liverpool must nail.

Second half underway in Linz… and no changes for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp makes no changes as LASK kick off.

Lewis Steele’s half-time view: sloppy, slow, and mistake-laden

Our reporter Lewis Steele is more critical in his assessment of Liverpool’s first-half performance than myself.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

What went wrong for Liverpool this half?

What does Jurgen Klopp need to change?

Liverpool trail to a great goal… and have come close themselves

Well, it’s hard to know what Jurgen Klopp will be telling his players.

Nobody picked up Florian Flecker for his early strike, and LASK did well to block Ryan Gravenberch from getting out to him. It looked like a training ground routine.

Darwin Nunez should have scored with a header but Tobias Lawal produced a great save, scarmbling across his line to paw away Nunez’s header.

Liverpool have created and haven’t looked particularly weak in defence, but they need something to change. At times they’re looking sloppy. LASK are winning the battlle of muscles in individual challenges but the Reds have got their number when it comes to pace and counter-attacks.

Half-time: LASK 1-0 Liverpool

Booking for LASK’s Robert Zulj

Who isn’t being put on the naughty step tonight?

That was well-deserved, though. He flew into Kostas Tsimikas as he ran into resistance as Liverpool countered.

A very enthusiastic chop on the Liverpool left-back.

Stefan Bajcetic booked

Rene Renner had the better of Bajcetic there on the right flank and the youngster, deputising out of position forn Trent Alexander-Arnold, brings him down.

Elias Havel booked for LASK

Ibrahima Konate booked

Konate is shown a card for dissent.

Goal! Legia Warszawa 2-2 Aston Villa! Lucas Digne!

A sumptuous volley from the full-back after a corner.

Darwin Nunez goes close!

Nunez tried to prod it in from inches out but somehow, Tobias Lawal got a hand to it. What a stop after Virgil van Dijk had headed it back into the box from a corner. All Nunez had to do was touch it, but out of nowhere the goalkeeper came. Speedy reactions.

Mo Salah and other warm up

Mo Salah has been eyed warming up for Liverpool in a scene which Jurgen Klopp hopes will spark some urgency into his side.

Liverpool’s pace meets a brick wall

Liverpool are beating LASK for pace here… but it’s not enough. Luis Diaz nearly nicked it past Branko Jovicic but the midfielder submitted a robust challenge to deny the Reds a breakaway.

Blistering Liverpool counter-attack… but no goal

Darwin Nunez did so well to burst past his marker down the left hand-side and pass the ball to Kostas Tsimikas.

He puts a dangerous ball in and Ryan Gravenberch nearly got on the end of it but LASK dealt with it.

Chance for LASK!

A fall from Ibrahima Konate gives Marin Ljubicic a chance to score as he bares down on goal but Virgil van Dijk gets across with a big tackle.

Konate appealed for a foul but wasn’t strong enough there.

Goal! Legia Warszawa 2-1 Aston Villa!

Legia have restored their advantage in an exciting start to their match against Aston Villa. Nice take from Ernest Muci, firing through a pair of legs into the far corner.

Assessment after 25 minutes

Liverpool don’t deserve to be 1-0 down.

Jurgen Klopp has no need to panic as his team are hardly putting in a faulty performance. The marking for the goal was lackadaisical but it took a moment of brilliance from Florian Flecker to capitalise on that.

Liverpool have seen most of the ball and created a variety of chances. Obviously the scoreline it far from what they want, but the performance is not terrible.

Kostas Tsimikas shoots well wide

Liverpool are showing good intent here, pressing high and winning the ball back fast if they lose it.

That determination resulted in the ball falling at the feet of Tsimikas, but unfortunately for the Reds, his shot ended nowhere near the goal as he dragged it wide.

Chance for Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunez heads over the bar after a looping cross from Harvey Elliott on the left.

Liverpool ned to reset themselves

This is the time to be calm. Liverpool can’t let this early goal derail them, and the saving grace is that they’ve got experience of coming from behind this eason.

Ryan Gravenberch has settled in nicely and got himself into the box with a good one-two but couldn’t get a shot away.

GOAL! LASK 1-0 Liverpool! Florian Flecker!

That is some strike from Flecker.

The corner is swung out to him fas he rests on the edge of the box unmarked, and he takes one touch before swiping it home diagonally across goal.

Ben Doak wins corner

Ben Doak is clearly a threat one-on-one.

He darted into the box there and beat his man before playing it across goal. Out for a corner with an interception, and LASK defend it well.

Liverpool win another corner after Kostas Tsimikas’ cross in headed out.

Early promise from Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott has been active in Liverpool’s start to the game.

The young midfielder has been getting on the ball and been a solid part of their attacks so far.

Goal! Legia Warszawa 1-1 Aston Villa

Over in Warsaw, Aston Villa have equalised! It’s a goal for Jhon Duran!

Liverpool in possession

Liverpool are on top so far and have kept the ball well with short passes.

Goal! Legia Warszawa 1-0 Aston Villa

There’s been a goal in Poland… and it’s not the start Unai Emery would have wanted as Aston Villa concede!

Paweł Wszołek dealt the blow for the experienced European outfit.

Succession of corners for LASK

LASK will have to make the most from set pieces tonight.

Liverpool defend a couple of corners competently.

And we’re off!

Liverpool kick off in their shiny new third kit.

Florian Flecker fouls new man Ryan Gravenberch with a fierce challenge in Liverpool’s half. Welcome, Ryan!

Anthem plays as players line up on the turf

Kick-off not far out now.

Players emerging from the tunnel

Liverpool and LASK are coming out of a rather spacious, ornate tunnel.

Lewis Steele’s view inside the ground

Ten minutes until kick-off

Jurgen Klopp: ‘We want to let Ryan Gravenberch out of the cage’

Jurgen Klopp told TNT Sports that Ryan Gravenberch has impressed him since day one.

He said: ‘Ryan looked from the first second that he is with us that he wants to show up so we want to let him out of the cage.’

On Doak: ‘[I hope] ust that he enjoys the game. In his one-on-one skills, he is exceptional, but he can improve in lots of departments. We are really positive.’

On LASK: ‘We have to defend on a top, top level as they brought in a player with a long throw-in and they have two wing0-backs who can throw the length of the stadium!’

On squad rotation: ‘The players who played on Saturday could have played again but we have to make sure that we use the full squad.

I have a team today who want to prove a point and show up. We want to show that we really want to give it all in this competition.’

Twenty minutes until kick-off

Liverpool warming up

Liverpool are out for their warm-up.

Big night for Ben Doak and Ryan Gravenberch on their full debuts. Doak penned a new long-term deal this week and this is a brilliant opportunity to show the fans – and Jurgen Klopp – what he can do.

Jurgen Klopp: ‘We are in the Europa League to compete, not to give opportunities’

While Jurgen Klopp will hand minutes to youngsters he trusts, there will be no easy handouts for Reds hopefuls and their manager has insisted that Liverpool will take the competition seriously.

Aston Villa team news for their clash against Legia Warszawa

Unai Emery has named his line-up for his side’s trip to Legia Warszawa in the Europa Conference League. We’ll bring you periodic updates with any key moments in that game.

Our reporter Tom Collomosse is there as Clement Lenglet, Jhon Duran, Youri Tielemans, and Nicolo Zaniolo start.

LASK reveal their line-up

Here are LASK’s 11 tonight.

Robert Zulj, who has been playing up front for them, skippers the side tonight. He’s had a strong start to the season with three goals and two assists in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Follow our reporter Lewis Steele!

Our Merseyside reporter Lewis Steele is in Linz tonight. Here is his assessment of Jurgen Klopp’s selection decisions tonight:

Well we thought that Jurgen Klopp would make changes but perhaps not to this level, with none of the players who started the win at Wolves on Saturday remaining in the XI here.

There’s a well-deserved start for 17-year-old Scottish sensation Ben Doak, while Irish goalkeeper Caiomhin Kelleher gets a chance. New Deadline Day signing Ryan Gravenberch is in from the off after making his debut at Wolves off the bench, and 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic is playing after a lengthy injury lay-off. Fringe players Harvey Elliott and Darwin Núñez also get a start after impressing in the second half on Saturday.

Who is Ben Doak?

Ben Doak is currently somewhere in the process of what we call ‘bursting onto the scene’.

He’s only 17 and has made just a handful of appearances after joining from Celtic last year, but he has already made a grand impression on his superiors. Virgil van Dijk even compared him to a ‘Tasmanian Devil’ because of his skill and speed – how many players get that honour?

Tonight, he becomes the third-youngest player to start a European game for the club after Raheem Sterling and Michael Owen.

A trip down memory lane

Liverpool’s 2015/16 Europa League campaign was exciting, infusing fans with a sense of hope after an underwhelming spell in their history.

While they lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the final, some of these players are regarded as Liverpool heroes for what they want on to achieve since. Others? Not so much.

Take a look at where that line-up is today.

Tonight’s venue

The Raiffeisen Arena in the beautiful city of Linz plays host to tonight’s encounter.

It only opened earlier this year on the site of the old ground and can seat around 19,000 spectators.

Eleven changes for Liverpool’s line-up

Jurgen Klopp has made sweeping changes to his starting lineup for this match.

Summer signing Ryan Gravenberch is handed his first start in Liverpool colours after coming on as a late sub in their last match.

Starlet Ben Doak gets a chance to shine from the off on the wing alongside fellow youngsters Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic, who are steadily building their careers in the first team.

Hello and welcome

Good afternoon and welcome to Mail Sport’s live blog as Liverpool travel to Austria to take on LASK.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are back in this competition for the first time since the 2015/16 season, when they reached the final and lost to Sevilla. We’re set to see a few youngsters handed opportunities in Europe this season for the Reds.

They face a club on the rise in LASK, who have gone from strength to strength since rejoining the Austrian Bundesliga in 2017/18. They finished third last season.
