Report: Amorim in talks with West Ham, unlikely to become Liverpool coach

Apr 22, 2024

West Ham United have emerged as a surprise contender to sign Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim.

Officials from the Premier League club have held talks with Amorim over a possible move to east London if the Hammers decide to part with manager David Moyes this summer, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Moyes’ contract expires in June, but a decision over the Scottish coach’s future won’t be made until the season ends.

Amorim’s ties to West Ham come after he was heavily linked with Liverpool in recent weeks. However, he’s no longer considered a candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp after the season, according to Ornstein.

The 39-year-old Portuguese coach is thought to be the leading candidate to succeed Moyes, even though West Ham could also weigh a move for former Real Madrid and Wolverhampton manager Julen Lopetegui, Ornstein reports.

Sporting CP are on the verge of capturing their second Primeira Liga title under Amorim.

Moyes has enjoyed a successful career as West Ham boss since joining in 2019. But the club has struggled this season, with Moyes appearing to be annoyed after being asked about his future following West Ham’s elimination from the UEFA Europa Conference League last week.

He oversaw the club’s triumphant Europa League Conference campaign last season – the club’s first European title since 1965 – but his time in charge could be over soon if the eighth-place Hammers continue to struggle over their remaining four Premier League games.
