Simon Jordan suggests reason why Cole Palmer has shined at Chelsea and casts doubt over Euro 2024 inclusion

Simon Jordan played down Cole Palmer’s impact at Chelsea and is unsure whether he has done enough to make England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Palmer was on target yet again in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Newcastle on Monday night to keep the Blues in the mix to qualify for Europe next season.

The 21-year-old was a surprise £42.5million signing from Manchester City last summer but fans have been left pleasantly surprised by his output this season.

Palmer has netted 13 times and registered 11 assists for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, earning him a call up to the England senior squad for the final two Euro 2024 qualifiers in November.

The Chelsea star has earned plaudits this season for his impressive displays but Jordan has a different theory on why Palmer has stood head and shoulders above many of his teammates this season.

The former Crystal Palace owner believes Palmer’s standout displays have been due to a lack of high-level performances from his teammates.

“I think he’s one of the few shining lights,” Jordan told talkSPORT. “I’d argue that if Manchester City really wanted to, they’d have kept him because they are not under Financial Fair Play or any kind of governance from that point of view.

“I think they sold him because perhaps they didn’t think he was right for Manchester City. At the stage in Chelsea’s transition, because they’ve got few shining lights, Cole Palmer will shine through.

“Ultimately he’s a good player, whether he makes the Euros I think is debatable,” he added. “I don’t think he’s had quite the impact that would leverage him in there but he can be part of the conversation.

“There’s the argument that he can be a really significant player in a season where Chelsea have not been what people anticipated.”

England boss Gareth Southgate was at Stamford Bridge on Monday to see Palmer’s latest heroics.

Southgate will announce his squad on Thursday for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium later this month.
