Getafe president drops hint on Mason Greenwood’s next club after Manchester United stance shifted

Feb 26, 2024

Getafe president Angel Torres believes Barcelona would be an ideal fit for Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old forward is currently at LaLiga club Getafe after United decided he must resume his playing career away from Old Trafford following an internal investigation.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022 before all charges were dropped in February 2023.

New minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is now in charge of football operations, recently suggested the Red Devils could change their stance on Greenwood when his Getafe loan ends.

After spending more than 20 months out of action, the United academy product has five goals and five assists in 21 matches this season – and his Red Devils contract runs until June 2025.

He has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs, including Barcelona, and Getafe chief Torres believes the Nou Camp would be a suitable destination for Greenwood.

“He is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year,” Torres said to Spanish radio station COPE.

“It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.

“In Spain, he has a market. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.”

Ratcliffe left the door open for Greenwood to play for United again after the British billionaire completed his purchase of a 27.7 per cent stake in the club.

“We will make a decision and we will justify it,” the INEOS chief said via The Athletic.

“He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.

Gabby Agbonlahor doesn’t think we’ll see Mason Greenwood playing in the Premier League ever again despite all charges against him being dropped

“The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”
