Report: Onana fears AFCON trip could cost him Man Utd starting job

Andre Onana is beginning to worry about his future at Manchester United after his nightmare performance in the Champions League this week.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is reportedly scared of losing his starting place on Erik ten Hag’s team if he leaves Manchester United in January to play with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations, according to The Guardian’s Will Unwin.

Uncertainty over his future as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper heightened after his disastrous performance in Wednesday’s 3-3 draw at Galatasaray.

He cost the Red Devils a chance to win the Group A contest after two of his errors resulted in goals for the Turkish side. Last-place United now need to win their final group-stage game against Bayern Munich next month to have a chance at progressing to the knockout rounds.

It was the latest questionable performance of many this season for Onana, who’s struggled to justify his lucrative transfer from Inter Milan last summer due to a series of costly blunders.

Regardless of his poor form, Onana is expected to be called up by Cameroon for the continental tournament, which runs from Jan. 13 to Feb. 11. Onana will likely miss at least four Premier League games for United if he heads to the Ivory Coast to link up with the Cameroon AFCON squad.

Backup ‘keeper Altay Bayindir could see an increase in playing time in Onana’s absence.

Despite Onana’s inconsistency this season, the 25-year-old Turkish goalkeeper has yet to make an appearance since joining United from Fenerbahce in September.
