Leeds, Leicester and Burnley set to sue Everton for £300million following financial fair play breach

Nov 20, 2023

Everton are set to be sued by three English clubs after the Merseysiders were found to have breached financial fair play rules.

The Premier League found the Toffees guilty and handed them a ten-point deduction as a result – the biggest points penalty in the competition’s history.

talkSPORT understands the sanction relates to interest payments on Everton‘s new Bromley Moore Dock Stadium.

Profit and sustainability rules allow clubs to lose a maximum of £105million over a three-year period or face sanctions.

Premier League chiefs have acknowledged the Merseyside club has not broken financial rules to gain a sporting advantage, but they have still been hit with a points penalty – becoming only the third club to be hit with a deduction in the Premier League era.

As a result, Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City have all confirmed their plans to sue, with the Toffees at risk of paying £300million in damages.

It comes after Sean Dyche‘s side avoided relegation on the final day of last season, leading Leeds and Leicester to face the drop instead.

Burnley have thrown their support behind the two clubs, with the Clarets believing that Everton‘s spending breached financial rules the previous season in 2021/22 when they faced the drop.

All three clubs have repeatedly expressed their unhappiness at the fact the case wasn’t dealt with last season when a points deduction would have seen them relegated.

While Everton have signaled their intention to appeal the points deduction, it does mean that the Merseysiders face an increasingly tough challenge this term.

Following the 10-point deduction, Everton have just four points from 12 games and sit in 19th position in the table.

However just two points from safety, the Toffees will stand every chance of avoiding relegation this term despite the penalty.
