Will Manchester City and Chelsea be deducted points? Premier League dish out punishment to Everton for breaching financial rules

Nov 18, 2023

Everton have been handed a ten-point deduction after breaching financial rules, leading many people to wonder what will happen to Manchester City and Chelsea.

The Toffees were found guilty of breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, although they are appealing the sanction.

The top-flight appear to have set a precedent for what is to come, meaning Man City and Chelsea will be watching on with keen interest.

Will Man City and Chelsea be deducted points?

Both of these Premier League giants are under scrutiny for some of their past dealings.

City are currently under investigation for 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules.

Meanwhile, Chelsea aren’t yet under investigation but could be the subject of one soon after allegations of secret payments.

These payments were supposedly made by companies that Roman Abramovich owned, which benefitted the club and weren’t reported.

So, both are slightly different; however, the outcomes could be similar.

Let’s start by looking at Man City.

The Citizens are accused of an incredible number of breaches that stretch over nine years, starting in the 2009/10 season.

The initial investigation took four years but has now been referred to an independent commission.

If found guilty of some or all of these charges, the punishments range from points deductions to being expelled from the league and having titles stripped.

So it could be a lot worse than Everton‘s punishment because the Toffees broke one rule: City have been accused of breaking over 100.

However, because of this, the process is expected to take a long time, with a resolution potentially years away.

Chelsea’s situation is a bit different because the club, under Todd Boehly and co, reported itself to the Premier League, UEFA and the FA.

This followed the new ownership group finding ‘incomplete financial information’ from 2012-2019.

UEFA have already fined Chelsea £8.7million for this, but that’s because they can only look so far back, the Premier League doesn’t have this rule, meaning points deductions or expulsion are on the table should they be found guilty of anything relating to these secret payments.

But unlike Everton, Man City and Chelsea are yet to be found guilty of anything, so talk of points deductions are premature.
