‘Do you want a bedtime story?’ Criticism from Aaron Ramsdale’s dad left Simon Jordan stunned and Danny Murphy doubles down

Simon Jordan is baffled professional footballers require their ‘mummies and daddies’ to defend them.

The talkSPORT host was responding to comments from Aaron Ramsdale’s father and advised him to stop speaking about his son’s predicament at Arsenal.

Nick Ramsdale previously made headlines with his row with Jamie Carragher on social media, but has now reignited the debate after appearing on a Arsenal fan podcast to talk about his son being dropped as the club’s No.1 goalkeeper.

Ramsdale Snr said his son has ‘lost his smile’ and aimed a dig at manager Mikel Arteta over the handling of the situation having replaced him with summer signing David Raya.

He also took aim at Jordan’s co-host, the former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, who had previously told the goalkeeper’s dad his professional footballer son is ‘big enough’ to defend himself.

Nick Ramsdale, though, said Murphy couldn’t see the difference between being a pundit and a father.

But he stood by his verdict, doubling down on his belief that parents of professional athletes should not get involved.

“Firstly, I like Aaron Ramsdale, I’ve backed him loads and I think he’s a tremendous goalkeeper, and that’s got nothing to do with this.

“Me, personally, in that situation I wouldn’t do what he did. I wouldn’t defend my son on social media or come out fighting if someone said something on commentary or made an opinion, because it’s just an opinion.

“The first thing I’d do is I’d be speaking to my son, talking with him about it and checking where he’s at – and that’s it.

“If I was advising my son now in this world in a similar situation I’d be telling him, unless something drastic had happened, to not respond to things on social media. The only person you need to be speaking to is the manager. You don’t need to be going out in public and commenting on what a pundit says about you.

“Why is a Premier League player’s dad on a podcast? He’s allowed to do what he wants, of course, but why as a player would you want your dad on any platform while you’re in a situation like that?

“Ramsdale is going to have a wonderful career wherever he ends up, he’s a brilliant goalkeeper, so his dad just needs to let him get on. Don’t be going on podcasts, don’t be talking about anything, because people will just twist and manipulate their words and it will always end up coming back to Ramsdale.

“Any parent should not be talking about a grown man who is a professional footballer in the Premier League, he can speak for himself. Do it at home, speak privately.”

But the situation appeared to grate on former Crystal Palace owner Jordan quite a bit.

He said: “He’s a professional sportsman! Why do you need your mummy and daddy to come out and say things for you? What’s next? The manager’s going to read you a bedtime story and tuck him up in bed at night?

“Get over it! It’s absurd! When you hear professional footballers have their parents speak on their behalf, what’s going on? Of course people will look at it with disdain – I do!

“When you’ve got Harry Maguire’s mother coming out and Aaron Ramsdale’s father coming out… you’ve got these boys who live in his vacuum of immense recognisability and immense rewards and every now and again it brings a bit of adversity – how about allow them to overcome their adversity with a bit if resilience and fortitude, which is supposedly what makes them be the elite men they are.

“For god’s sake, these are grown men being paid like grown men – give them an opportunity to take it, rather than get mummy and daddy to say, ‘My boy’s getting a little bit of a shellacking’ – oh give over!

“He’s a man! He’s a professional footballer! He doesn’t need his daddy to speak for him!

“His father should use better judgement. If I was Aaron Ramsdale I’d be saying, ‘Dad pack it in’, and I wouldn’t do it again… but he’s gone and done it again! He’s carried it on!

“This is not schoolyard football, it’s ridiculous!”
