Is Pervis Estupinan fit to play against Sheffield United this weekend? Roberto De Zerbi provides update after Ajax injury

Pervis Estupinan suffered a disastrous comeback after lasting just 12 minutes into his return during Brighton’s 2-0 win away at Ajax.

The Fantasy Premier League favourite has been nursing a muscle injury since the 6-1 thrashing against Aston Villa in September.

Estupinan looked to have put his injury woes behind him after being named on the bench for the European trip to Amsterdam.

Goals from Ansu Fati and Simon Adingra sealed a famous victory for the Seagulls over Ajax as they moved into the Europa League qualification spots.

But Estupinan was part of a triple injury blow suffered by Roberto De Zerbi with James Milner and Lewis Dunk also limping out of the contest.

Brighton boss De Zerbi was keen on nursing Estupinan back into action ahead of the club’s Premier League meeting with the Blades.

The Ecuadorian defender was named on the bench against Ajax and introduced after 65 minutes with the Seagulls already two goals up.

However, he managed just 12 minutes before he succumbed to a fresh injury and was withdrawn for Carlos Baleba.

De Zerbi issued a positive update after the match, but it seems highly unlikely that Estupinan will be available against Sheffield United.

Addressing the three injuries post-match, De Zerbi said: “I think they are not so important injuries, I hope.

“But anyway we have to find different solutions in terms of players because it is very tough this season.

“I I knew before the season [it] could be so difficult, so tough and in this moment it is very tough [to] find the first 11.

“But Sunday we have a crucial game for us [against Sheffield United].

“We want to go back to a win, a victory at home with our fans. They have to help us because we are very tired but we need three points and we will be enough to try [to get] the victory on Sunday.”
