Former Premier League star Bosko Balaban has been jailed for a year after failing to pay child support to his ex-wife.

Ex-Aston Villa striker Balaban failed to pay £70,000 in financial support to his ex-wife and model Iva Radic, who was named Miss Croatia in 1995.

The former Croatia international was given a conditional sentence of one year and four years of probation in 2021 as a result of overdue maintenance money.

However, he failed to pay the total amount in time – a time frame of two years.

Balaban, who was married to Radic for over ten years before their divorce in 2017, have three children together.

After failing to stick to the adhered timeframe, it has resulted in the 45-year-old being imprisoned for one year in January, with four years suspended, according to Belgian outlet HLN.

Furthermore, even if Balaban pays the £70k still owed, he will not be able to escape prison time.

The former centre-forward is best known for his spell at Club Brugge, where he played for four years and scored 58 goals in 118 appearances.

However, he also had a short stint at Aston Villa, featuring just eight times in the 2001/02 campaign without finding the back of the net.

He was subsequently shipped out on loan to Dinamo Zagreb the following season, the club Villa purchased him from just a year before.

The Premier League side then sold him to Club Brugge, where he would have better luck in front of goal.

During his time in Belgium, he was nicknamed ‘Super Bosko’ because of his goalscoring antics, including one match where he scored four times.

Balaban was ridiculed as one of the biggest flop signings of the Premier League era after Villa forked out £5.8million for his services – quite a lofty fee for 2001.

But the ex-forward hit out at his reputation, saying in 2019: “If you’re a club that throws big money at signings and then doesn’t let them actually play, the jokes should really be at your expense.”

Balaban retired from playing football in 2015 after three years with Malaysian side Selangor, having made a third stint with Dinamo Zagreb.

During his third spell with the Croatian club, he was fined 100KN (around £12) for making a fascist salute to fans after scoring a goal against Inter Zapresic.

He has since worked as an agent after hanging up his boots, representing players such as ex-Leicester star Andrej Kramaric.

Meanwhile, Radic has worked as a model for brands including Paco Rabanne, Chanel and H&M and has over 113,000 followers on Instagram.
