Tonali is believed to be cooperating with the FA amid fears he could face further sanctions.

The 23-year-old was hit with the ban from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) last week after pleading guilty to placing bets on matches he featured in during his time in Serie A.

The Magpies’ £52million signing from AC Milan will miss the remainder of the season and next summer’s European Championships in Germany, should Italy qualify for the tournament.

Tonali made 12 appearances for Newcastle with his final game coming in last week’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The midfielder was quick to make an impression on Tyneside and scored his only goal for the club in the 5-1 opening day victory over Aston Villa.

Tonali quickly became apart of boss Eddie Howe’s first-choice midfield trio alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, providing the Magpies with much-needed know-how ahead of their return to the Champions League.

He featured in the opening group game draw at former club Milan and was a key figure in Newcastle’s emphatic 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in September.

But his dream start began to turn sour when Tonali – along with Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo – were sent home from international duty in October, after being informed of a police probe into their involvement in illegal betting.

Tonali has since admitted to having a gambling problem and agreed to a treatment programme consisting of eight months of rehab activities.

Discussing the player in his press conference on Friday, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “Well he (Sandro) is training.

Simon Jordan accuses Eddie Howe and Sandro Tonali of potentially using gambling ‘addiction card’ amid Newcastle man’s betting allegations

“He has started that lonely process although he is with his team-mates. We have played so many games at the moment a lot of sessions have been individual.

“But he has started that journey into the ten months so it is a mental test for him.

“Sandro has to try to come through that and come through it a better player.

“It is definitely our objective as coaches is to try to help him. But it is going to be difficult for him.”
