Kalvin Phillips is on the January shortlist of a host of Premier League clubs including Liverpool and Newcastle, talkSPORT understands.

Phillips is likely to push for a move away from Manchester City after failing to convince Pep Guardiola he is worthy of a run in the first-team.

talkSPORT exclusively revealed that Phillips was on Liverpool’s radar during the summer transfer window.

Fulham are also eyeing the England midfielder as a potential replacement for Bayern Munich target Joao Palhinha.

Sandro Tonali’s 10-month betting ban brings Newcastle firmly into the equation, especially if there is a push-back from Premier League rivals to them signing players from Saudi Arabia.

Tottenham are another side who are understood to be monitoring Phillips’s situation but he is unlikely to hold down a regular place in their midfield.

The 27-year-old has made seven appearances for City in all competitions this season, but only managed a single start.

Signed from boyhood side Leeds in the summer of 2022 for £42million, Phillips penned a six-year deal, but has spent a portion of his debut season out with a shoulder injury which required surgery.

Despite his game time being blocked by new signings Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes at club level, Phillips is still an England regular and may be looking for more minutes ahead of Euro 2024.

Linked with Bayern Munich for much of last summer as the German side desperately sought a defensive midfielder, the Bavarians aren’t the only ones struggling in that department.

City’s league rivals Liverpool underwent a midfield overhaul in the summer, and currently only have one defensive specialist in Wataru Endo, although Jurgen Klopp so far is yet to rely on him.

That issue was highlighted in a 1-1 draw with Luton Town, where Alexis Mac Allister received his fifth booking of the season and therefore a suspension while playing out of position in a holding midfield role.

Newcastle didn’t show such problems in a headline 1-0 win over Arsenal, but they will still be searching for solutions after Tonali was ruled out until next season due to a ban for breaching betting regulations.
