He then received the ball and passed it out of play, before suddenly collapsing to his knees and looked to be in some discomfort.

United medical staff ran on to attend to Maguire, who appeared to have sustained a cut just above his eye.

Despite the injury, he was deemed OK enough to carry on and he soon returned to the pitch.

However, the referee questioned Maguire’s condition 57 minutes later as United physios were forced on to analyse the defender.

The England centre-back still refused to be substituted, returning to the action and signalling he was fine to continue, where he helped United edge out a 1-0 win.

It has now been revealed that Maguire was assessed over his first incident, with the ex-Leicester star cleared via the concussion protocols.

As for the second time he went off the pitch, this was due to a hand injury, and was therefore unrelated to his first half problem.

Reacting on commentary for talkSPORT, England legend Stuart Pearce said: “I make a lot of references to rugby league.

“But why can’t we bring Varane on, let Maguire go through his protocol checks, then bring him back on? That would safeguard the player.”

He added: “Well done to the referees, they’e got to safeguard the players.

“Maguire is in a situation where he hasn’t got on the pitch all season, but now Ten Hag doesn’t want to take him off!”
