Brentford don’t want to sell Ivan Toney in January but set asking price for summer bid amid Arsenal and Chelsea interest

Brentford are determined to resist any January offers for Ivan Toney, talkSPORT understands.

The Bees will also demand at least £80million for Toney come the summer transfer window even though by then he will only have a year to run on his current contract.

Arsenal and Chelsea are both tracking Toney’s situation as he closes in on a return to football.

The striker is serving an eight-month ban for breaching FA betting rules.

As a result, Toney is expected to return to action in mid-January with clubs glamorising to try and bring him on board.

Ahead of his return, the 27-year-old is now back in full training with Brentford and has even featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly where he scored a lovely flick past the goalkeeper.

The striker scored 20 Premier League goals in 33 appearances for Brentford last season before his ban commenced.

Toney has just 20 months remaining on his contract in west London with the Bees keen to tie him down to a new deal before long.

But with a number of high-profile suitors, Brentford could face a battle to keep their star man in the long run.

Ian Wright recently told The Overlap’s Stick to Football Podcast that he’d be the ‘last piece of the jigsaw’ for Arsenal.

Martin Keown questions whether Arsenal need Brentford’s Ivan Toney to win the Premier League, with them already having Gabriel Jesus

Gabby Agbonlahor agrees with the Gunners legend, saying on talkSPORT Breakfast: “They have to [sign Toney]. [Eddie] Nketiah is a decent striker to bring on with 15 minutes to go, he’s not your main striker.

“Gabriel Jesus, good on the ball, good at linking but he’s not strong enough holding the ball up, he’s not getting into the spots where you get tap-ins, he’s not going to get those headers as well.

“So I think Ian Wright is totally right, whoever is serious about the title in January, go get him.”
