James Maddison is loving life at Tottenham and it’s not hard to see why.

Having arrived from Leicester over the summer, the midfielder already looks like one of the best signings of 2023 so far having taken to life in north London like a duck to water.

As well as scoring two goals and providing five assists to put Spurs in the title mix, Maddison has attracted plaudits for his honest and well-spoken post-match interviews and his personality-filled performances.

Maddison is a player who loves to partake in banter with the fans and his teammates – whether it’s engaging in a darts celebration with teammates including Heung-min Son, or riling Bournemouth supporters by pretending to move the ball at a corner kick.

But while his behaviour often attracts headlines with those who find his antics funny, Maddison says that all of it comes naturally.

Speaking ahead of the Monday night clash with Fulham, Maddison said: “All of that stuff is off-the-cuff.

“For example, the corner thing doesn’t happen if I’m not being abused.

“There’s no structure to it, I go over to take a corner and they’re effing and blinding at me and it’s a way for me to get one over on them, isn’t it?

“I like that pantomime villain-type vibe that’s created often at away games, especially because of the type of player I am and even the type of person I am sometimes, I don’t mind getting a bit of stick.

“Sometimes it comes with the character I have but I don’t mind that.

“It’s all banter, back and forth – I like to give it as much as I can take it.”

A huge part of his success has been the relationship that he’s built with Ange Postecoglou.

Much like Maddison, Postecoglou has got the English media eating out of the palm of his hands with his honest, relatable approach to the media – something that has made him one of the most popular bosses in the Premier League.

Speaking of the Australian boss, Maddison said: “He’s a really good motivational speaker.

“He has this way about him when he talks to a group of players that he’s almost like an alpha-male, you know?

“When he talks then everyone listens – you don’t even blink, he’s one of them.

“He’s very good at motivating so the talks he does the day before the game or even the day of the game, they get you going and get you ready to go out and play because he’s demanding of you.

“In the media when he’s talking in press conferences and all of the stuff you see on social media, that’s the kind of guy he is.

“He uses real-world stuff to compare to football – it’s hard to explain but he relates it back to life and family and stuff and makes you want to go and play for him and run and work hard for him, so he’s got that natural talent.”

James Maddison and Tottenham are in action against Fulham on Monday night, a clash that is exclusively live on talkSPORT.
