Mark Goldbridge: My verdict on who Manchester United should keep or sell from Marcus Rashford to Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire

In an exclusive column for talkSPORT.com, Mark Goldbridge delivers his verdict on the players Manchester United should keep or sell…

It’s all change at Manchester United at the moment with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS getting to work… and there’s plenty for them to do.

There are question marks over players in Ten Hag's squad

We’re in the January transfer window and there are a lot of question marks over a number of players in Erik ten Hag’s squad right now.

So, who should Manchester United keep and who should they sell in what remains of the January transfer window, or in the summer?

Andre Onana

This is someone who I’ve been critical of, but this is not a player who needs to be sold, which might surprise people. His standard has just not been good enough, but it is early days.

I remember the early days of David de Gea, I certainly don’t think they were this bad. There are more months left in the season and I don’t think they’ll sell him in the summer.

But, if he keeps making mistakes then big clubs are ruthless and he would have to be sold.

Verdict: KEEP (for now)

Harry Maguire

He was very close to a move to West Ham in the summer, but stayed and did reasonably well until he got injured.

I wouldn’t be doing anything in January, unless a big offer came in, but in the summer when you look at his career at Manchester United and his age profile and wanting to move forward as a club over the next three years, I think that’s a little too much for Maguire.

I would move him on in the summer.

Verdict: SELL

Raphael Varane

There was talk of him going to Saudi Arabia in January to raise some money. I was dead against that, but as we go into the summer it is one where we have to take emotion out of it and ask if Varane is going to be part of a three-year project at his age and injury issues.

You could cash in and remove those huge wages. I wouldn’t be opposed to selling him in the summer, but on the other hand I don’t mind keeping him.

If we want to move forward with a project, then the summer would be the time to cash in.

Verdict: SELL

Mason Mount

He’s had a terrible start to his Manchester United career. You could almost say he’s a January signing, because he’s done nothing as a summer signing with these two injuries.

We’re confused as a fanbase as to where he fits in and still don’t know where he’ll fit in.

We spent £55m on him and it’s unfair to say sell him when he hasn’t really had any game time.

We are going to have to see what happens in the second part of the season, so it’s keep Mason Mount for me.

Verdict: KEEP

Christian Eriksen

For me, this is a definite let go. Good player, but probably not used properly at Manchester United.

I always saw Eriksen as a No.10 at Spurs and I don’t know why we’ve played him as an eight. He’s not quick enough, doesn’t pick up the runners, and is out of position.

This is a position you have to rejuvenate and have to let him go in the summer.

Verdict: SELL

Eriksen was a free transfer signing in 2022

Casemiro

I’m not in a similar boat to Varane here. We’ve seen the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric play well into their 30s. Casemiro is still three or four years off them.

The quality of the player and what he offers to the team is valuable. You can’t get rid of everybody in the summer.

If Varane, Maguire and Eriksen go then you have to keep one of the senior players and Casemiro would be the best one to keep.

Verdict: KEEP

Scott McTominay

What are we going to do with Manchester United’s top goalscorer Scott McTominay? There are some fans out there who think he’s a decent player… but I’m not one of them.

He does exactly what he says on the tin. If he scores a goal it makes a difference, but if he doesn’t then brings next to nothing to the team.

This is not a Manchester United player, I think McTominay needs to go. I would be amazed if the club did it, but it’s 100 per cent sell.

Verdict: SELL

McTominay has been at Man United since he was five

Anthony Martial

This is easy. It comes down to player power over why he’s still here.

Most Manchester United fans would agree the road has come to an end, it’s ridiculous the contract might get run down so he can earn a bit more money.

There’s no value to keeping Anthony Martial and he should be going in the January transfer window.

Verdict: SELL

Martial's contract expires in the summer

Marcus Rashford

There will be zero appetite from the club to remove a homegrown player like Marcus Rashford, especially when they’ve given him a massive contract.

These next four months are crucial for him, I don’t think we can have the same as the last four months.

Let’s hope the goal against Spurs is a spark. We know he is capable of scoring goals.

I don’t want to see Marcus Rashford sold by Manchester United. I want to see him at his best.

I would keep, but it has to be a watching brief. It’s not acceptable to play how he has over the last few months.

Verdict: KEEP

Rashford has scored just four goals this season

Antony

The price tag is ridiculous. As for the player, it’s similar to Rashford, you have to see how he does over the next four months then look in the summer.

If it’s still the same then it’s hard to justify a future at Manchester United.

He could be a player we end up loaning in the summer if he has a bad few months.

Verdict: KEEP (for now)
