Although Arsenal ran City close in last season’s title race, it has been the Reds that have been the nearest challengers in recent seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won five of the last six Premier League titles with Liverpool being the only club to break the mould when they cantered to the title crown in 2020.

Despite City’s dominance, Liverpool have been no pushovers for the reigning Treble winners, having won four and drawn three of the clubs’ last 11 meetings across all competitions.

However, Oasis legend Gallagher aimed a dig at the Reds’ most recent title triumph while claiming City are inching closer to emulating their European pedigree.

Gallagher told talkSPORT: “Liverpool for all their fans crowing, they’ve been the best team in England once in 30 years. That lot, they’re terrible winners but worse losers. Now we’ve got to emulate them in Europe somehow and I think we’re getting closer.”

The last meeting between the teams came in April which saw a rampant Man City side run out 4-1 winners at the Etihad and Gallagher would welcome more of the same this weekend.

Liverpool head to Manchester on the back of a five-game undefeated Premier League run, but their biggest test of the season awaits them in the form of the reigning champions.

For City, much hinges on the fitness of their key names after an international break to forget for Guardiola.
