Conor McGregor’s boxing coach wants Floyd Mayweather rematch and insists ‘it would be different’

Conor McGregor has admitted one regret he has from his fight with Floyd Mayweather is not having Phil Sutcliffe in his corner.

Sutcliffe is McGregor’s boxing coach having trained him since he was a kid and he told talkSPORT that the Irishman ‘had a lot of talent as a youngster’.

McGregor’s boxing prowess has shone through in his UFC career, with many of his knockouts coming through striking.

But, for McGregor’s fight against Mayweather in 2017, he decided to stick with his usual MMA coaching setup of John Kavanagh and Owen Roddy, without enlisting the help of Sutcliffe.

Since then, however, Sutcliffe has been added to the team, and he was part of McGregor’s camps against Donald Cerrone and Dustin Poirier.

So, if McGregor ever were to fight Mayweather again, Sutfcliffe would undoubtedly be there.

Asked about a potential rematch between Mayweather and McGregor, Sutcliffe joked: “I hope he boxes for me, I’ll get another payday. I’d love for him to fight Mayweather again.”

And Sutcliffe believes he could help McGregor put up a better challenge against Mayweather if they went at it again.

“He’s a little bit older Mayweather and Conor’s a little bit wiser,” Sutcliffe said.

“On the stats from the first fight he hit Mayweather more than any other fighter in history.

“I watched the fight six or seven times… all you need is good balance, good footwork and good reading, but with Mayweather it’s a different thing, you’d have to give him a little bit more pressure.

“And I know things but I’m not going to say them on here, but of course it would be different.”

As for what Sutcliffe could bring to McGregor’s corner, he explained: “I can see when someone throws something what to do, that’s what I’m good at.

“I’ve always been good at that, but I’m getting better as I get older because I’ve come to more understanding because I’ve seen different things.”

In their last fight, McGregor looked more threatening than anyone had expected pre-fight, but when the Irishman began to tire, Mayweather capitalised and got him out of there in round ten.

This was the final fight of Mayweather’s 50-bout undefeated career, but perhaps the prospect of a huge payday in a rematch with McGregor could be enough to tempt ‘Money’ out of retirement.
