Why Chelsea star Cole Palmer has the Saint Kitts and Nevis flag on his boots

Cole Palmer’s summer move to Chelsea was always going to be a big risk, especially to a club who have certainly struggled on the pitch.

The 21-year-old left his boyhood club Manchester City in the search of regular first-team football and it was the Blues who came calling.

Since signing on transfer deadline day, Palmer has been an immense success at Chelsea with eight goal contributions in 11 appearances.

His latest Blues goal came against his former club City on Sunday in stoppage-time during their dramatic 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer received a call-up to the senior England squad a day later and was asked about a viral video of him rapping to Clarks by Vybz Kartel.

The midfielder’s boots can be seen hanging in the air, donning the England flag amid his appearances in their youth sides.

As well as this, the Saint Kitts and Nevis flag also features in a tribute to his dad, who’s family is from the Caribbean country.

Speaking to The Players’ Tribune on how his father used to help him practice his ball control, he revealed: “He used to say, ‘No point trying to shoot if you can’t keep hold of the ball in the first place.’

“We would do that every single day whatever the weather — and my dad’s family is from St Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. He hates going out in the cold. But he’d do it for me anyway.

“That’s why I got the St Kitts flag on my boots, as a little tribute to him and his family.”

Palmer addressed the video that was posted on TikTok by his sister when he spoke to the media on Tuesday: “Me and my sister was in the house one day and there was a TikTok trend going around.

“People were signing songs and stuff and my sister said, ‘Come and sing this song.’ So I was like, ‘Alright sweet, will do.’

“Because on my boots it has the St. Kitts flag and the England flag, my sister wanted to make sure the St. Kitts flag got in.

“She posted it and it stayed quiet for a while to be fair and then one day I saw it everywhere and now I can’t stop seeing it.”

All four of Palmer’s goals for Chelsea so far have been penalties and his strike against City was the most crucial of the lot.

He has also assisted a further four goals for the Blues and could make his England debut on Friday night in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta, live on talkSPORT.
