Manchester United vs Luton Town predictions

Manchester United are not in a good place right now.

As soon as they take a step forward, as they did with a 1-0 defeat of Fulham in the Premier League last weekend, it is followed by two steps back.

The latest disappointment came in the capital of Denmark on Wednesday night, as United fell to a 4-3 defeat by Copenhagen which has left their chances of qualification for the knockout phase of the Champions League hanging by a thread.

A loss to Galatasaray in Istanbul later this month would end their participation in Europe’s principal competition before Christmas.

That is not United’s only problem right now. Things are not going too well in the Premier League either.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash with Luton Town, Erik ten Hag’s team sit eighth in the table. They have lost five of their first 11 games and have a negative goal difference.

Most worrying of all is that United’s performances domestically have been even worse than their results. In the expected goals table – a measure of the quality of chances a side creates and concedes – United rank a lowly 11th.

Despite their struggles, the Red Devils are odds-on favourites to beat Luton. If they fall short, Ten Hag could be in trouble.

The problems at Old Trafford run much deeper than the manager. This is a club that has been a symbol of dysfunction for at least a decade now.

Even so, Ten Hag is under pressure and another negative result this weekend would put the Dutchman in an even more vulnerable position.

📝 Man Utd vs Luton betting tips

Manchester United will not necessarily have everything their own way against Luton Town this weekend.

Manchester United to win and both teams to score – 15/8 (bet365)

There were mitigating factors for Manchester United’s defeat by Copenhagen on matchday four of the Champions League.

Rasmus Højlund’s brace put the visitors to Parken Stadium in a comfortable position with half an hour on the clock, but Marcus Rashford’s debatable red card in the 42nd minute proved to be a turning point.

Needless to say, playing more than half of the game with a numerical disadvantage did not aid United’s cause.

But even taking that into account, the away team could have put up a much sturdier defence of their 2-0 lead. They later went 3-2 ahead, only to concede twice more late on.

The only silver lining for United is that this is one of the kinder Premier League assignments they could have on the final weekend before the November international break.

That is not to write off Luton Town, who delivered a spirited performance in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool last time out.

However, they also conceded plenty of chances in that game. Luton can take advantage of United’s defensive woes, but they may still succumb to defeat here.

Back Manchester United to win and both teams to score at 15/8 with bet365.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals – 6/5 (bet365)

Having spent most of last Sunday’s game on the back foot, Luton took a surprise lead via a fine counter-attacking goal against Liverpool.

They could not quite hold on as Luis Diaz popped up in second-half stoppage time to rescue a point for the away side, but Rob Edwards was proud of his players’ effort.

“There’s a sense of what if, if only, but the overwhelming feeling is pride not disappointment. We know we need to get more points,” he said.

“We haven’t got enough but we have some and have taken some from an outstanding football team.”

Given Manchester United’s struggles, Luton will feel they can at least make life difficult for their illustrious opponents at Old Trafford.

The Hatters do not possess an abundance of proven Premier League quality, but Andros Townsend and Ross Barkley – two experienced top-flight players – both caught the eye against Liverpool.

United have the joint-ninth worst defensive record in the Premier League, while they have now shipped 10 goals in their last four outings in all competitions.

This could be a high-scoring encounter and do not rule out Luton making their mark going forward.

Tip both teams to score over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with bet365

Rasmus Højlund to score any time – 6/5 (Sky Bet)

One of the few positives that Manchester United can take from Wednesday’s collapse against Copenhagen is the double scored by Højlund in the first half.

Somewhat surprisingly, no player in the Champions League has scored more goals than the United centre-forward up to now.

But the Denmark international is still waiting for his first strike in the Premier League. Højlund is not yet the complete striker, but it is only a matter of time before he breaks his duck in England’s top tier.

In an ideal world, the 20-year-old would be finding his way as a rotation option at Old Trafford. But United’s subpar situation dictates that he has immediately become their main man in attack.

Against a Luton backline which has been breached 21 times in 11 games, Højlund looks like a good choice to find the back of the net.
