Toulouse vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool almost became the first team to lose to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Sunday, but a dramatic late intervention from Luis Diaz saved them.

The Colombia international, who appeared as a second-half substitute despite the fact his father has still not been released by his kidnappers back home, scored an equaliser deep into second-half stoppage time.

Only Luton fans could begrudge Diaz that moment and the whole footballing world is hoping for good news from Colombia this week.

Liverpool were by no means perfect at Kenilworth Road, but a defeat would have been hugely unfortunate. Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s team created more than enough opportunities to have won pretty comfortably.

Luton performed admirably. They tried to deny Liverpool space in the final third and broke forward at pace when possession changed hands. The opening goal scored by Tahith Chong came at the end of a sweeping counter-attack.

But even had they lost, there would have been no need for Liverpool to conduct a soul-searching inquiry into their display. Throughout the match, the only thing that was lacking from the Reds was the finishing touch: they finished with an expected goals rate of three.

By that metric, Liverpool have created the best chances of any Premier League team this season – ahead even of reigning champions Manchester City, who smashed six goals past Bournemouth at the weekend.

Klopp and his players will now turn their attention back to the Europa League, where Liverpool are sitting pretty at the top of Group E.

A win here would extend their participation in the competition beyond Christmas. Depending on the result between LASK and Union Saint-Gilloise, a victory could even wrap up top spot for Liverpool – and thus a guaranteed place in the round of 16.

📝 Toulouse vs Liverpool betting tips

Liverpool should have too much quality for Toulouse on matchday four of the Europa League group stage.

Liverpool to win and both teams to score – 13/8 (bet365)

There may come a time later in the campaign where Liverpool are forced to choose between the Premier League and Europa League.

In an ideal world they would be able to balance both competitions for the entirety of the season, but if the Reds are involved in a title race in the spring, Klopp will have a decision to make: does he field his best XI in the Europa League too, or save some of his players for domestic matters?

So far at least, the Liverpool boss has been able to strike the right balance. Klopp has shuffled his pack for each of his team’s three continental contests in 2023/24, but Liverpool have won all three anyway.

They will be hoping for another success here, not least because that would allow Liverpool to continue resting some of their bigger names for upcoming meetings with LASK and Union Saint-Gilloise.

Toulouse scored in a 5-1 loss at Anfield last month and Liverpool are yet to keep a clean sheet away from home in any competition this season.

So while the visitors should pick up maximum points, a shut-out could be beyond them once more.

Back Liverpool to win and both teams to score at 13/8 with bet365

Liverpool to score over 2.5 goals – 6/5 (bet365)

Assuming Diaz is available for selection on Thursday, Liverpool will have a full complement of attacking options to choose from.

Whichever three of their six senior forwards are given the nod (and do not rule out a start for the 17-year-old Ben Doak), the Reds will pack a punch going forward.

Liverpool may have only scored once against Luton at the weekend, but they created enough chances to score three times or more.

As we discussed earlier, no team in the Premier League has fashioned as many scoring opportunities as Klopp’s, while Liverpool are averaging 2.44 goals per game in all competitions.

Given they hit five past Toulouse last time out, this bet looks like pretty good value.

Granted, the French team should be a tougher nut to crack on home turf. But Toulouse are not exactly pulling up any trees in Ligue 1: they are 14th after 11 matches, just one point above the relegation play-off spot.

Choose over 2.5 goals for Liverpool at 6/5 with bet365

Cody Gakpo to score any time – 6/4 (bet365)

After a spell on the sidelines with injury, Cody Gakpo has started only one Liverpool game since the beginning of October.

That match was the 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in the fourth round of the EFL Cup last week, and there is reason to believe Gakpo will be given another opportunity from the first whistle on Thursday.

Given he has often appeared as a substitute, the Netherlands international has a decent record of four goals in 12 games so far this season.

Liverpool scored five times against Toulouse in October and a similarly high-scoring performance from the away team would present Gakpo with plenty of chances to find the back of the net.

An intelligent footballer, the former PSV man is a strong contender to beat the Toulouse goalkeeper on matchday four of the Europa League.

Tip Cody Gakpo to score any time at 6/4 with bet365
