Manchester United v Luton preview
Manchester United’s consistently inconsistent start to the campaign continued in midweek with a surprising 4-3 away from home against Copenhagen in the Champions League, leaving them bottom of their group and with three defeats in their last four matches in all comps.
In the Premier League, last weekend’s win for Erik ten Hag’s side against Fulham mean they had into this latest round of fixtures eighth in the table, six points off the top four but only three points ahead of the bottom half of the table.
The Red Devils have now won eight and lost nine of their 17 matches in all competitions this season, which includes four defeats in their last six home matches which leaves the Dutch manager facing a bit of pressure ahead of Saturday’s match, which now feels like a must win.
Luton should make the trip north Manchester in confident mood after holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road last Sunday, though equally will face disappointment having conceded a 95th minute equaliser.
Rob Edwards’ side are in need of a win with only goal difference separating them from the relegation zone, and are without a win in each of their last five matches, picking up just two points in that time.
The Hatters have lost only one of their last three away matches though, which includes their only league victory of the season at Goodison Park.
These two teams last met in the third round of the Carabao Cup three seasons ago, which ended in a 3-0 defeat for Luton, but their last league meeting came back in 1992 and ended in a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road.
The Red Devils have won nine of their last meetings with the Hatters, who haven’t got the better of the Manchester side since 1987, and haven’t won away against them since the days of Newton Heath back in 1897.
Manchester United v Luton betting tips
Manchester United are almost in must-win territory after a recent barren run of results, and the dropping of points at home against a newly promoted Luton side would see the pressure ramp up on Ten Hag in their dugout.
United are strong favourites for victory on Saturday though, and should get the job done. Betfair are offering 6/1 odds on Manchester United to win 2-0.
