Chelsea star Cole Palmer shushed Tottenham fans after scoring from the penalty spot following a wild opening 30 minutes.

Cristian Romero was shown a red card after VAR ruled out Moises Caicedo’s goal after the Argentine’s high challenge on Enzo Fernandez.

Palmer stood up to take the resulting penalty, hitting it to his right and equalising after Dejan Kulusevski’s early opener, and immediately celebrated by shushing Tottenham fans.

It came after a fierce opening half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Romero might have been sent off earlier in the contest.

As Raheem Sterling’s goal was ruled out for handball, Romero had thrown a petulant leg out at Levi Colwill, though VAR ruled there was nothing wrong.

In total, Chelsea had the ball in the Spurs net four times in the opening half – only one stood, though.

Sterling’s effort was ruled out for handball before Caicedo’s long-range effort was given offside for Nicolas Jackson being in the goalkeeper’s eyeline.

However, the penalty was given in the same moment by VAR, and Romero’s red, before Jackson then had an effort ruled out for offside soon after.

Tottenham had started brightly, as well, when Kulusevski’s deflected strike left Robert Sanchez helpless.

Heung-min Son then made it two before the narrowest of offside decisions ruled the effort out.

But Ange Postecoglou, who was booked during the 45 minutes, has had to deal with an injury crisis mid-match, as well as being down to 10 men.

James Maddison and Micky Van de Ven had to hobble off minutes before half-time.

Chelsea and Tottenham is often a spicy affair and Monday night proved to be no different with Destiny Udogie being sent off after the break.

Eventually, the Blues broke down a resilient nine-men Spurs team with Jackson grabbing a confidence-boosting hat-trick.

Upon netting the third in the 97th minute, the 22-year-old pulled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous celebration in front of the Chelsea fans.
