Ange Postecoglou sets Premier League record that Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho could not manage

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has set a new Premier League after his fantastic start to life in England.

Spurs have been in jaw-dropping form this season with all credit going to Postecoglou, turning around a club that was in dire need of a reboot.

They are top of the table and are currently unbeaten, giving fans hope that they could even challenge for the title this season.

And that is down to an electric start where they have achieved 23 points from their opening nine games.

That is a record for a manager in their first season at a club in the Premier League, one that Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho would be jealous of.

Mourinho in his first year at Chelsea in 2004/05 managed 20 points from his opening nine games, losing the ninth to Manchester City in what was their only defeat of the season in the league.

And Guardiola managed the same amount in his first season at City in 2016/17, with a defeat to Tottenham of all clubs that stifled them early in the campaign.

But Postecoglou’s Spurs remain rampant with their 2-0 victory over Fulham on Monday night taking them back to the top of the table.

It is all the more impressive considering that City and Arsenal are both on 21 points so far after nine games, Guardiola beating his own total from 2016/17 as well as Mikel Arteta.

Tottenham have dropped points just twice this season, the opening day of the new campaign in a 2-2 draw with Brentford and a 2-2 draw against Arsenal last month.

They have already beaten Manchester United, thrashed Burnley and taken Liverpool’s scalp, though they might consider themselves lucky with the latter after a VAR catastrophe.

But despite leading the rest of the pack, Postecoglou was not happy with Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday night.

The Australian coach has insisted that his side should have put their London rivals to the sword after missing several chances.

“I’m really disappointed with the second half,” Postecoglou said in his post-match press conference.

“We were nowhere near the levels we have been all year and we have got to make sure we stay disciplined in our approach.

“The keeper [Guglielmo Vicario] made a couple of great saves to keep the clean sheet and within the context we should have had a much better control of the game.

“I’m not trying to make a point, it’s just what I saw. I thought we were really wasteful with the ball in the second half.

“We took some liberties with taking extra touches. I’ve been around long enough to know if you try to take liberties, you’ll get dragged down pretty quickly.

“I’m not going to let the fact that we’ve won the game disguise the opportunity there for us to improve.

“In the second half, with the ball we weren’t anywhere near the levels we’ve already shown this year and there was no real reason for it.

“It wasn’t as if the opposition did anything different. It was more self-inflicted.”
