Marvel star Chris Pratt called in by Rob McElhenney for funny Wrexham-themed Ryan Reynolds birthday gag

If there’s one thing Wrexham’s owners have loved doing since they bought the club, it’s publicly bantering each other on their birthdays.

This year, Rob McElhenney has carried on that tradition, pulling off arguably his biggest stunt yet for fellow co-owner Ryan Reynolds on his 47th birthday.

Last year, the American flew a giant blimp with a rare, unflattering photo of Reynolds blown up on the front at The Racecourse Ground.

But this year, McElhenney has swerved away from risking breaking Welsh aviation laws to do something different, but still as eye-catching.

And he’s even got one of Reynolds’ fellow Marvel stars in on the act.

Posting a video X, formally known as Twitter, McElhenney said: “Happy birthday, @VancityReynolds.

“This year I had to bring in an actual superhero… @prattprattpratt.”

Chris Pratt, who is known for starring in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers, is seen sat opposite a serious-looking McElhenney, who has a notebook and pen in hand at a desk.

This year, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star’s master plan is to create a Ryan Reynolds memorial park in Wrexham on the site of the town’s former Hippodrome.

McElhenney has even created a website, calling it ‘Parks and Wrex’, a play on words for the sitcom Parks and Recreation Pratt was in.

But at the start of the clip, it’s revealed Pratt has absolutely no idea what McElhenney was about to propose.

“What am I doing here?” Pratt asks, before McElhenney replies: “You know how Ryan and I are always doing these elaborate things for each others birthdays?”

But much to McElhenney’s disappointment, Pratt doesn’t know, despite the American’s best efforts to get his gestures for Reynolds viral on social media.

“Do I have to follow you to see that? Was it on his social media?” Chris then asks, before joking: “I might have seen it if it was on his, I don’t follow you.”

After telling Pratt he can give him has handle, a compilation of computer generated images of the proposed park plays, with McElhenney continuing to say: “This year, my idea involves a park.

“We’ll have open, green spaces, pop-up restaurants, we’ll have movie screenings, there’ll be actual green lanterns.”

He also explains that there will be a statue of Reynolds in the park, jokingly writing ‘hideous statue’ next to the image of it.

A description of the park on the website reads: “Parks & Wrex are delighted to introduce the soon to be renamed Ryan Rodney Reynolds Memorial Park.

McElhenney made sure to make a cheeky swipe at his pal's looks too, as he often does

“This community space located in the heart of Wrexham will be a place for the public to gather, grow, and play. Working in close partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, we’re beautifying the park in the coming months to be a reflection of the spirit of Wrexham and Wales.

“And we’re renaming it. Probably something Welsh, not Canadian.”

Although parts of McElhenney’s latest birthday stunt will crack fans up, the co-owners have actually been hailed for the move after already bringing a huge boost to Wrexham and its economy.

According to Wrexham Council, the Welsh town benefited from just over £151m of visitor spend, up by 51 per cent from 2021 data.

Who knows what McElhenney will have up his sleeve for next year!
