Former Tottenham and Ajax star Rafael van der Vaart has given a brutally honest take on the Eredivisie side sacking their manager.

Maurice Steijn was given his marching orders on Monday following a 4-3 defeat to Utrecht on Sunday.

The result leaves the Dutch giants in the relegation zone amid their worst run since 1954.

One former player believes the manager shouldn’t have taken the full blame for their disastrous season, though.

And he certainly had a… different way of putting it.

Speaking about the news of Steijn’s dismissal, the former Spurs midfielder said: “I feel for Maurice Steijn. He has so many s*** players.”

“I don’t rate Ajax higher than Excelsior or FC Volendam,” he continued. “I’m being serious. 12 players have been signed who all turned out to be useless.”

Van der Vaart played 156 games for the club between 2000 and 2005 after coming through their youth ranks, helping them win two league titles.

He later signed for Tottenham in 2010, making 76 appearances for the north London outfit, scoring 27 goals and providing 18 assists in that time.

Despite Ajax’s ongoing issues, Van der Vaart’s son has followed in his father’s footsteps and signed for them.

Damian van der Vaart, aged 17, has signed a one-year deal from Danish side Esbjerg and will play in the Under-18s.

He is also a midfielder, just like his dad.
