It started with a pre-match furore of the displaying of an image of Adolf Hitler on the scoreboard which the hosts were forced to apologise for.

And on the pitch it got worse as the Wolverines quickly established their dominance over their in-state rivals.

The No.2 ranked Michigan stretched their lead to 35-0 at the start of the second half.

MSU quarterback Katin Houser lobbed the ball up for Mike Sainristil to pick off and run home for a touchdown.

But while Sainristil was rushing the ball into the end zone, Brown found himself grappling with McGregor by the line of scrimmage.

He threw his opponent to the deck and then decided to launch himself helmet first in the back of McGregor’s head, while he lay prone.

The move saw Brown ejected from the game by the referees.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: “That’s blatant assault.”

Another added: “Worried about the health & safety of our players.”

Meanwhile, this fan posted: “Cannot wait for this roster overhaul. most undisciplined football teams i’ve seen.”

And a fourth said: “That should be a multi-game suspension.”
